Under the Town and Country Planning (Use Classes) Order 1987, and the subsequent amendments in 1995 and 2006, the lawful planning use that may be carried out a property is defined under the following headings.

A1

Shops

Shops, retail warehouses, hairdressers, undertakers, travel and ticket agencies, post offices, pet shops, sandwich bars, showrooms, domestic hire shops, dry cleaners and funeral directors.

A2

Financial & Professional Services

Banks, building societies, estate and employment agencies, professional and financial services and betting offices.

A3

Restaurants & Cafés

For the sale of food and drink for consumption on the premises - restaurants, snack bars and cafes.

A4

Drinking Establishments

Public houses, wine bars or other drinking establishments (but not night clubs).

A5

Hot Food Takeaways

For the sale of hot food for consumption off the premises.

B1

Business

Offices, research and development, light industry appropriate in a residential area.

B2

General Industry

General industrial use.

B3 -B7

Special Industrial Groups

Note: these classes from the 1997 order were rolled up into class B2 by the Use Classes (Amendment) Order 1995.

B8

Storage or Distribution

This class includes open air storage.

C1

Hotels

Hotels, boarding houses and guest houses.

C2

Residential Institutions

Residential care homes, hospitals, nursing homes, boarding schools, residential colleges and training centres.

C2a

Secure Residential Institutions

Hospitals, nursing homes, convalescent care centres.

C3

Dwelling Houses

Dwellings or houses occupied by up to 6 people (living together as a household), small businesses at home, households providing care for residents.

D1

Non Residential Institutions

Church halls, places of worship, clinics, health centres, consulting rooms, day nurseries, schools, art galleries, museums, libraries.

D2

Assembly and Leisure

Cinemas, music/concert halls, bingo and dance halls (not night clubs), swimming pools, skating rinks, gyms, sports arenas (except motor racing or involving use of firearms).

Sui Generis

Sui Generis

Theatres, hostels (where no significant care is provided), scrap yards, petrol stations, car showrooms/shops, launderettes, amusement centres, nightclubs, casinos, minicab/taxi businesses.
